▶ CHARACTER
NAME: Jean-Claude
CANON: Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter
CANON POINT: Just before Burnt Offerings, Book 7
AGE: ~630, physically 30
BACKGROUND: Jean-Claude on wikipedia; Jean-Claude on the Anita Blake wiki
PERSONALITY: Jean-Claude is a complicated person. To those who do not know him well he is perhaps even mysterious. This is largely due to the fact that he has spent centuries in the company of vampires who would have used his true emotions against him. He has learned how to hide what he truly feels about any given situation behind a mask, ranging from pleasant indifference to haughtiness to the blank slate that the older vampires demonstrate when they hide in upon themselves.
And of course of that mask is also flirtation. He was chosen to be a vampire because of his good looks, and he was chosen to be the nobleman's whipping boy because of how attractive he was as a boy. He is not necessarily the most powerful vampire, nor the biggest or strongest. But he knows that his looks are an asset, and so in most given situations he defaults to falling back on that. Even in the darkest of times for him, his desirability was one of the only things he had left. He has learned therefore to use it as a weapon. Seducing his way past people's defenses. Out of necessity he has come to enjoy such things as well, although not all flirtation that Jean-Claude offers is meant from the heart.
He likes to keep his cards close to his chest and does not want to reveal any more information about himself than necessary. He keeps a tight control on everything he says and does, knowing that if he should show any weaknesses in front of any other vampires then they might be used against him. Everything he says or does is carefully chosen or calculated. He knows how to play the game of words and enjoys toying with those who are not as good at it, like a cat with a mouse.
Of course, in the other vampires' eyes, Jean-Claude is too soft. He has not demonstrated the same lust for power as other vampires, and he has allowed himself to be subservient to others in turn. They see this as a weakness in him. To Jean-Claude, it is the only reason that he has survived as long as he has. He recognizes his limitations in the moment. He will not reach for more until he is certain he can achieve his goals.
Jean-Claude does have, after all, a near Machiavellian sense of pragmatism. Just as the expressions he shows on his face, nearly every move he makes is calculated and precise. He is not above using a situation to his advantage no matter who else he might be using in the same breath, as he demonstrated in basically giving Anita an ultimatum of forcing her to date him as well as Richard, essentially threatening to kill Richard if she did not at least give him a chance. He also conveniently builds himself a position of power with Richard and Anita in much the same way, finding himself in trouble where building their bond as his wolf and human servant is conveniently the only way to save everyone, much to their chagrin. That is not to say that he does not keep them safe, however. He is good on his word and he looks after his people as he should, though if one of them should threaten someone he cares for he is not above punishing them appropriately -- and appropriately for a vampire would definitely come off cruel in the eyes of someone else, since friends don't usually lock friends in iron caskets for months at a time...
Still, he is comparatively not a cruel vampire. He would rather his people be free to make their own choices than be forced into them by an outside hand. And Jean-Claude is capable of making friends, growing to love, which are all dangerous emotions in the world he comes from and as such he tends to hold himself somewhat apart, until he has claimed a person into his inner circle. For better or for worse.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Note: I recognize that there are a lot of powers here, some of them somewhat more ridiculous than others. I'm definitely not looking to abuse the use of any of them and will definitely be asking permissions for anything that might involve the minds/person of any other character before using that ability on/against the character I am threading against!
Weaknesses:
INVENTORY:
MOONBLESSING: Based on Jean-Claude’s abilities and the abilities of the moonblessing, I think it would make the most sense for him to be pulled into Cordis. Given that he has the ardeur which gives him the ability to feed his vampirism from feelings of sexual arousal in his immediate vicinity, this will also pair nicely with being given pheromones that attract everyone within his vicinity as well.

SAMPLE TWO:
Jean-Claude does not know if he has ever been in quite such a situation as this before. Alone in a foreign world, with none of the people he might call his own there by his side. There is of course a certain freedom to it. And a certain terror.
There'd been a time once before, of course, where he had turned his back on everything he had known. There had been nothing left for him there, at Belle's court. Nothing but pain and humiliation. Nothing but Asher's eyes, burning out from within the ruins of his once-beautiful face, and the hatred within them. Nothing but Belle's scorn and disdain for him, for how dare he challenge to leave her side again. But he'd had to get out, he could not stand another moment of her abuse, not another moment of watching the way that she treated Asher, not knowing that Asher's ruin, Julianna's death, everything fell back to him.
He had built himself a new life, in St Louis. Even despite their continued attempts to punish him, to stifle his potential. He had established himself a business -- several businesses, in fact, though none so prosperous as Guilty Pleasures. Cultivated relations with the local wolves, and found himself a genuinely pleasant pomme de sang in Jason. And then there was Anita.
Anita, Anita. Who had seemed to fall into his lap one day, brimming with anger and such power. He had known he had had to have her from the moment he'd laid eyes on her. Of course, her beauty had also had something to do with that as well. And the fact that she had fought against his desires for her tooth and nail. Like a little wildcat, hissing and spitting at the very suggestion he might dare to approach her. How very fitting that she had been the one to help place him into power as Master of the City. That she would be the one to accept his marks and become his human servant in the end. (How very ironic that the other man she would wind up dating would in fact be the werewolf to create their triumvirate of power, for that matter.)
But it is not like that now. Not here in this new city, where suddenly he finds himself without them all. He had not asked for this departure. He had not asked for any of this. Truth be told, he had finally found himself if not exactly where he'd wanted to be then close. Anita in his arms and in his bed. Richard a reluctant third, he and his wolves feeding their power -- now as Ulfric no less, making the entire pack Jean-Claude's to command. He as Master of the City, with Anita and her power at his side, and for once he'd had it all to himself. And now -- when he reaches out to the place where they all should be, there is silence.
Jean-Claude lets out a heavy sigh. It does not do to dwell on such things. He will find a way to get back to his people. His city. His lover. His home. For now he will do what he does best. He will survive.
His smile shines in the darkness as he makes his way towards the man ahead of him. If he should look close enough, he may be able to see the tip of a fang, peering out just a little longer than the rest of his teeth.
"Bonne nuit, mon ami," Jean-Claude calls out to the other man. He sways his hips as he walks, his movement liquid, like a dancer. Like a cat on the prowl. There is one thing that is true. If he has lost his base of power, he is going to need to build it again from the ground up. And this includes establishing himself a solid base of willing donors once more. "You are out late tonight."
He watches the way the other man's eyes follow his movement, and smiles wider at the hunger that greets him there. Ah yes. This, he can work with.
"Could say the same for you," comes the gruff retort.
Jean-Claude offers him a Gallic shrug in return. The gesture is very French, saying everything and nothing at once.
"What brings you here at such a time?" he asks. "Business? Or pleasure?" He lets just a hint of his power trickle into the last word, so that the other man should feel it. Like silk against his skin. Smooth and luxurious.
"Whoa," he says, stepping forward towards Jean-Claude, his hard-to-get attitude nearly forgotten in the sudden shock of the ghost of tingles still playing down his spine. "Pleasure. Definitely pleasure."
Jean-Claude smiles again, moving forward to rest a cool hand against the other man's chest. Through his touch, he can already feel the man's desire for him. Feeding him almost as efficiently as though he had held up his wrist and offered a vein.
"Good," he replies, tilting his head back so that he might meet the other man's gaze. His eyes glowing a soft blue from the power the ardeur gently feeds to him. "I am glad we are in agreement."

- Superhuman strength
- Superhuman speed
- Heightened senses
- Accelerated healing
- Flight -- note: in game he will only be able to fly up to 4 stories high
- Empathic Voice Manipulation: He can essentially manipulate his voice to give you a feeling or sensation along with what he is saying if you do not have empathic/psychic blocking. This is usually a sensation akin to silk or fur against skin
- Empathic sensory perception: Jean-Claude can, in a sense, smell when a person is lying to him, and when they are afraid, sexually aroused, etc.
- Animal to Call: As a powerful vampire, Jean-Claude has the ability to "call" to wolves and werewolves and summon them to him like a homing beacon
- Hypnosis: being able to use his gaze, his voice, and his aura to introduce suggestions into the minds of humans, or vampires/metahumans/etc of an equal or lesser power than his own who do not possess the appropriate mental blocking. -- note: in game he must maintain eye contact/physical contact and the hypnosis can be fought away, with effort
- Being able to mask his own power level
- Creating a human servant, a magical bond between himself and a human that strengthens both himself and the human. As of this point in canon, Anita is his human servant, though he does not benefit from this bond as she is not present in game
- Creating a triumvirate of power with his animal to call and his human servant. As of this point in canon he does have a triumvirate with Anita and Richard, though again he cannot benefit from its power as neither other character is present in game
- The Ardeur: Jean-Claude can feed off of lust and sexual energy to sustain himself in much the same way that he can feed from blood. He does not have to be touching the person to be able to feed, and their lust does not have to be directed towards him
- His bite: Jean-Claude’s bite can, if you are not blocked to psychic abilities, make you feel very good. It’s a side-effect of the ardeur. He will also be able to feed off of the sexual pleasure it gives you
- Leadership: for all that he is somewhat conniving, he is good at being the Master of the City. He has multiple businesses that he built from the ground up that are currently thriving
- Swordsmanship: Jean-Claude was born to a time when challenging men to a duel with rapiers was the norm and he has had 600 years of practice to be very good at it
Weaknesses:
- Burnt by the touch of sunlight -- will combust and be reduced to ash if exposed for prolonged periods of time
- Dislikes the smell and touch of garlic, and will be weakened if he comes into physical contact with it
- Cannot physically enter someone's home without an invitation -- invitations can be revoked whenever that person so chooses
- Silver causes wounds that heal at the same rate as regular mortal wounds, thus a bullet/stabbing to the head/heart would be fatal
- A wooden stake through the heart would also kill him
- Holy water burns like acid
- Any religious iconography can repel or even harm him so long as the person who is carrying it is a true believer in that religion (it must also be a real religious item i.e. not just making the sign of the cross with your fingers)
- If you pull his fangs, he will be essentially powerless until they grow back
INVENTORY:
- fancy chest with 3 fancy vampire dress up outfits inside
- his portrait with Asher and Julianna
- a photograph of Anita
- his huge black marble bathtub, with silver swan mouth waterspout
MOONBLESSING: Based on Jean-Claude’s abilities and the abilities of the moonblessing, I think it would make the most sense for him to be pulled into Cordis. Given that he has the ardeur which gives him the ability to feed his vampirism from feelings of sexual arousal in his immediate vicinity, this will also pair nicely with being given pheromones that attract everyone within his vicinity as well.
